General Registry Office Certificates |
|
Everybody born, married or died in England or Wales on or since 1 July 1837 should have their birth, marriage or death respectively registered by the State. This information is available in the form of indexes held in the Family Records Centre in London. These national indexes comprise a name, registration district and reference number.
Using this information a full certificate can be applied for. The information contained on the full certificate is as follows: |

Birth Certificates
Date and place of birth, forenames of child, its sex, name and occupation of father, name and maiden name of mother, name and address of the informant, their signature and the date of registration. |

Marriage Certificates
Names of bride and groom, ages, names of fathers of bride and groom and their occupations, the date and place, the marital condition of the bride and groom, their rank or profession, residence, signatures of the bride and groom and the witnesses. |

Death Certificates
Date and place of death, name, sex, age and occupation of the deceased, cause of death, name and address of the informant and date of registration. |

Census Returns 1841-1901
The information available from the census returns is:
Address, names of people in the household on the census night, their ages, occupations, relationship to the head of the household and from 1851 their place of birth |
